How we rank

Who is on the list. On Nov 3, 2026 we searched Google Maps for 4 things: "landscaper Carlsbad CA", "landscaper Encinitas CA", "artificial turf installer Carlsbad CA" and "artificial turf installer Encinitas CA". We took the 1st result of each search, then the 2nd of each, and so on (no ads, no repeats) until we had 17. One listing with no phone, website or type of business was skipped. Then we added 3 businesses that serve these cities and that HAZE had already looked at: Garden Rhythms, Stone + Grove and Prestigious Turf.

What we score. Only things a business can change. Each one gets 0 to 100 points, then we add them up with these weights:

What we checkWeight
Google stars and reviews25%
Phone speed15%
Yelp stars and reviews10%
Answers to reviews10%
Tap-to-call and quote form10%
Links that work10%
Google listing filled in10%
Seen by AI tools10%
  • Stars and reviews (Google and Yelp): every business starts with 10 pretend 3-star reviews, then we add its real ones. So a few 5-star reviews count, but many good reviews count more.
  • Answers to reviews: how many of the newest 10 Google reviews (or all of them, if there are fewer) have an answer from the owner. We sort the reviews by newest first.
  • Phone speed: Google's own speed test, set to a phone. We ran it 3 times, took the middle score, then did it all again later and took the average. If the test cannot finish on a site at all, we leave speed out for that business and say so on its page.
  • Tap-to-call and quote form: half for a phone number you can tap on the home page, half for a form on the home page or the contact page.
  • Links that work: we open the links on the home page and in the menu. Each one that shows an error page takes off 34 points.
  • Google listing filled in: 5 parts, 20 points each: a website link, a link that loads, hours, a phone number and at least 10 photos.
  • Seen by AI tools: half if AI tools can read the site's words without running extra code. Half for how often the business was named when we asked ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode "best landscaper in Carlsbad CA", "best landscaper in Encinitas CA", "best artificial turf installer in Carlsbad CA", "best artificial turf installer in Encinitas CA", twice each.

Checked twice. Every number was checked two times, at least 10 minutes apart, on Nov 3, 2026. If a number changed in between (for example, a new review), we used the newer one.

The 3 fixes. For each business we tried every set of 3 fixes it could make and kept the set that adds the most points. The new rank is worked out the same way as the real rank, as if no other business changed. A fixed speed counts as 90, the bottom of Google's "good" range. A new website counts as a typical one: the middle speed score on this list (57), with tap-to-call, a form and working links. New reviews count as 10 more at the business's own star average. Yelp does not allow asking for reviews, so we never count a Yelp fix.

Every month. We check everything again each month and update this page.
